Obituary for Thomas (Tom) Hutton Brooks

Thomas (Tom) Hutton Brooks
1927 – 2022

Tom passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital Ottawa.  He was predeceased by his father Carl, mothers Mary (Hutton) and Susan (Reddekopp), brothers Roy and Jack and sisters-in-law Terry and Ruth. He is survived by his loving wife Jean (Bond), sister Thelma (Barry), brothers Bill (Cheryl) and Edward (Judy) and sister-in-law Lynn.

Tom was born in Humboldt Saskatchewan and the family later moved in 1937 to outside Radisson, Saskatchewan.  After school Tom started a seagoing career progressing to become a Ship Master sailing on foreign going, coastwise, Arctic and Great Lakes voyages. He later joined the Federal Government as a Marine Surveyor and worked on marine safety, pollution prevention and international programs.

After retirement Tom advocated for many years on behalf of merchant navy veterans and worked on merchant navy issues in general.

Tom wishes to thank his dear wife Jean of 48 years for all their great years together, and his family, friends and colleagues for their great contribution to a fulfilling life. Special thanks to the nursing staff, Dr Bruni and Dr Evans at the QCH for their compassionate care in his final weeks.

Tom’s memorial service will be held at Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Central Chapel on Saturday April 16, 2022 at 9:30am followed by a reception.   Interment will follow the reception at the Arnprior Albert Street Cemetery.
