Obituary for Tristan Ferreira Meyer

MEYER, Tristan Yehuda Ferreira
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Tristan Yehuda Ferreira Meyer passed away on January 18, 2020 in Cancun, Mexico, at the age of 23. He succumbed to injuries sustained in a drowning accident on Tuesday, January 14. He has left behind a network of extended and blended families: parents, Armando Ferreira, Michelle Meyer (Rob Linscott), Paul Wertman (Paula Speevak); siblings Raffi Meyer-Wertman, Jennifer and Jason Ferreira, Claire and Gabriel Wertman-Parris; uncles/aunts Winston Meyer/Karen Duffy, Manny and Susan Wertman and their families, John Ferreira; Ezilda, Edouardo, Albertina, Maria Noemia; cousins Samuel and William Meyer, Melissa, Christine and Michael Nemeth, Rui Ferreira; nephews Alexander and Jonathan Ferreira; newly-blended siblings Sarah, Karli and Menasheh Speevak-Sladowski.
Tristan was devoted to his friends and social causes, passionate about human rights and environmental issues and a young man who loved to empower others. He loved to dance, analyze sports, play rugby and travel the world. He loved being a camp counsellor at Camp B'Nai Brith near Ottawa. He went to the Bahamas and participated in a work-study program focused on the integration of disabled children into the school system there. Many of the friends he made there were impacted by the enormous hurricane that devasted the Bahamas this past Fall. He was raising money to send back there to help with the rebuilding. That's the kind of person Tristan had become - a great big heart with an enormous energy to apply to his best intentions.
Tristan was a courageous young man who modeled a profound transformation and embarked on a path of healing, compassion and gratitude. He was a bright light, wanting everyone to be well and to be empowered. He had travelled to Jakarta, Indonesia at age 12 with Children's International Summer Village, to Europe visiting family a number of times, to Iceland, California, Budapest, Turkey, Israel, Germany, Spain and many times to New York City where his grandparents had met and confirmed their vows of marriage.
No words can describe the devastation we all feel at the loss of a young man who was determined and committed to making a positive difference in the world and was just starting out on his path.
A celebration of Tristan's life will take place at the First Unitarian congregation, 30 Cleary Ave. in Ottawa on Thursday, January 23 at 1:30 p.m. followed by interment at the Jewish Memorial Gardens, 6549 Herberts Corners Rd., Greely, ON. The family will begin to observe shiva immediately following the interment at 1816 Matthews Ave. The details of times and locations of subsequent shiva observances will be announced at the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, kindly donate to a charity that reflects Tristan's passions.
