Obituary for Walter Albin Kuzniuk

August 26, 1935, Elma, Manitoba – January 8, 2021, Ottawa, Ontario

Deep in our hearts a memory is kept of one we loved but will never forget.

It is with sadness we mark the passing of Walter (Wally) Kuzniuk after a long life, well lived, at the age of 85 years.

A devoted father and grandfather, Walter will always be cherished by his son Gregory and his partner Tim Arychuk, his daughter Katrina, son-in-law, Jesse Hover, grandsons Adin and Ellis, his daughter Mary, co-parent Toma Feizo Gas, and grandsons Mato and Joaquin. Wally (Ladjo) is lovingly remembered by his sister Joyce Zviedris, brother-in-law Walter, his niece Andrea, his uncles, Gus and Harry Wasiuta of Winnipeg, as well as many cousins. His fishing buddies, colleagues, neighbours and friends will also remember him with fond memories.

Walter was committed to his wife of 48 years, Paulé (nee: Olynciev), who passed away in 2005. He was the beloved son of Ann Stasiuk (nee: Wasiuta), who predeceased Walter in 1991.

Walter was born in Elma, Manitoba, on the farm of his grandfather, George Wasiuta. He lived there for several years before his family moved to Geraldton, Ontario, and later to Toronto. It was in Toronto where he met and married his wife, Paulé. Walter’s career as an Electrical Consultant, took him and his family to Montreal and finally to Ottawa.

Walter was direct, fair, and kind-hearted. He loved the splendour of nature and had a deep respect for our earth. Long before recycling programs, he would gather items and drive them to the recycling plant monthly. For 45 years he gathered with friends, fishing in their favourite places, bringing home enough, yet not too much. Community-minded he volunteered as a football and hockey coach and was an active member of the Kinsmen Club. There were many years when he made his annual transformation as Santa Claus during the Christmas season. Quietly listening to the hopes and dreams of children’s hearts, he would deliver presents with other community volunteers to those in need. Above all, he was a storyteller. Oh, he could tell a good story that would evoke laughter and memorable moments. He will be fondly remembered and loved in our hearts.

Tribute donations in Walter’s name may be made to the Nature Conservancy of Canada or to the Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Wally's Celebration of Life will occur at a later date.
