Obituary for Anthony John Poe

Anthony John Poe
July 10, 1929 –August 23, 2015

It is with great sadness that the family of Anthony Poë, Professor Emeritus (University of Toronto) announces his sudden passing in Ottawa of heart failure. Tony will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, family member, colleague, mentor and friend. He was proud to be a member of the chemistry community, which encompassed an exceptional career which spanned six decades of research, publishing and teaching. Affiliated with several renowned universities, he obtained his first degree at Oxford University. He further advanced his education and teaching career at Imperial College, London (UK). Following which he was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the University of Toronto (Erindale). Sabbaticals were spent with the acclaimed chemist Fred Basolo at North Western University, USA and later as a fellow at St John’s College, Cambridge, England.

Tony is survived by his wife of 38 years, Donna (Shields-Poë), the children from his first marriage, Simon, Sarah (Tim) Wilton, Kate (Ian) Simpson, and Mathew (Ana); ten grandchildren James (Lucy),Michael (Laura-Jayne), Lucy, Rebecca, Andrew, and Toby; William (Helen), Connie, Sam and Chido; three great-grandchildren, and cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews and family members in Canada and abroad.

Ever the gentleman, Tony will be remembered by family, colleagues, students and friends around the world, for his devotion to Science and for his quiet charm, kind words and thoughtful manner.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Médecins Sans Frontières or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
