From Golden Glove boxer to Canada’s First Olympic Gold Medal Chef
A life lived to the fullest
At home and surround by love; after 5 years of courageously fighting health issues, Georges was taken by angels.
Born in Rodez, France on April 4th, 1932, Georges’ culinary schooling began at a young age at the Academy in Nice.
Georges' parents and their 10 children immigrated to Canada. Georges returned to France at the age of 19 to fulfill his military duty in Algeria. His strong character, physical fortitude and boxing abilities set him apart, in the military and in life, during this time he won France’s Golden Glove Championship.
Georges returned to Canada to focus on his culinary career. He became President of the Federation of World Cooks, was Executive Chef for Hilton Hotels, and the Managing Chef for the Canadian Pavilion at Expo 67', Montreal. During Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s period as Prime Minister of Canada, Georges oversaw Canadian banquets for the Queen of England, for World Leaders, and for many other dignitaries. In addition, he was instrumental in starting up the George Brown College Culinary Program and the Culinary Institute of America.
A highlight of Georges career was a highlight for Canada; leading two Canadian Culinary teams to the most Gold Medals in every category.
Georges played an important role mentoring and inspiring generations of Canadian Chefs.
Georges leaves behind his wife of 10 years, Sheira Smith, his daughter Line Chauvet (Michel Buteau) and his granddaughters, Marlene and Isabelle Lauzon. Georges was also known as Papi to Chloe, Charlie, Shaylynn, Robert and Brock. Nicole Smith, Gerry Nault (Janet) and Steven Nault (Catherine), considered Georges an amazing and loving part of our family, teaching them culinary secrets and skills which they will continue to perfect in his memory.
He will be missed by his younger brother Jacques, who was always close to Georges in life, and in the kitchen. Together they strove to bring Canada’s culinary cuisine to new heights, and they succeeded.
Predeceased by his first wife Nicole Bouvet and son Alain, who passed when he was four years old of Leukemia. Alain has been waiting with opens arms, for 55 years, to play with his Papa.
Thank you to our many friends and neighbors who have been more than generous and supportive during our difficult journey.
A special thank you to all the staff at the CLSC, their professional and caring service made our journey at home much easier… and to our outstanding nurse Julie, she was our Angel of mercy.
A celebration of life in Georges’ memory will be held at a later date.
