Obituary for Ann B. Denis
Ottawa sociologist and professor Ann B. Denis died suddenly the morning of February 5 from cardiac arrest. She was 73 years of age. Denis joined the faculty of Social Science at the University of Ottawa in 1973 as part of what was then the Department of Sociology, today the School for Sociological and Anthropological Studies. Nearly forty years later, at the time of her retirement in 2009, Ann B. Denis was named Professor emerita by the University, to recognize the excellence of her ongoing contributions.
Ann B. Denis was internationally renowned for her research and publications in the area of power relations within societies, and between societies. Her range of interests included, for example, such questions as: the use of the internet in education; as well as the manner in which gender, ethnicity, race, and class frame the education of engineers both in Canada and the Commonwealth nations of the Caribbean.
At the University of Ottawa, Professor Denis established the university's research ethics committee. She was devoted to her students, teaching both at the undergraduate and graduate level, and serving on many dissertation examination committees throughout Canada. More than once, her University colleagues chose her to be the chair of their unit.
Ann B. Denis was a core member of the United Nations Committee of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW), in addition to having served as president of CRIAW Denis participated generously on the editorial boards of a number of international associations in sociology, ethnic relations, and women's issues.
Professor Denis earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at the London School of Economics, U.K. Her undergraduate degree in sociology was earned in Carleton University.
A long-time resident of Ottawa, Ann B. Denis was married to Greg Belkov who died in 1992. Denis was an active supporter of Ottawa theatre, including the Ottawa Little Theatre, the Company of Fools, the Great Canadian Theatre Company, as well as the National Arts Centre. She very much enjoyed gathering friends and colleagues around her dinner table; she was moreover, an accomplished Scrabble player.
Memorial services for Ann B. Denis will take place at 2p.m., Sunday, March 3, at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Avenue, Ottawa.
In lieu of flowers donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Women’s Heart Health Center would be appreciated.
