LAURENT ISABELLE, C.M.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of LAURENT ALBERT ISABELLE, 90, of Ottawa. Laurent was born in Lisieux, Saskatchewan, on August 22, 1922 and died on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 in Victoria, British Columbia.
Laurent is the beloved husband of 61 years of Mary Elaine Isabelle (née Leblanc), brother of Jean-Paul Isabelle, O.M.I, and sister Thérèse Isabelle, S.G.M. (dec'd). He is the dearly loved father of Paul (Lyne Paquet), André (Shelley Cram), Thérèse (Brent Fearon), and Pierre (Lisa Krzywicki), with 9 grand-children and 4 great grand-children.
All those who met Laurent were taken by his warm smile and charming demeanour. His deep voice, piercing blue eyes, gregarious laugh, his gentlemanly air: who didn’t love to meet with Laurent? His genuine inquisitive nature gave him the natural capacity to befriend and engage with people on almost any topic. People felt special, unique, important in his presence and his thoughtful opinions were welcomed and sought after. His many lifetime friends and colleagues will remember Laurent as deeply joyous, generous, perpetually thankful and truly content. His love and friendship were a true gift.
A proud Francophone, Laurent worked ardently for the advancement of the French language and culture in Canada; active member of the Richelieu Club of Ottawa all his life, founding member of the Conseil des affaires franco-ontariennes, chair of the Board of Le Droit, trustee of the Ottawa Board of Education and dynamic team member for the establishment of French secondary public education in Ottawa. Laurent's membership in Dialogue Canada since its founding in 1990 speaks to his passion for a truly bilingual Canada. Laurent was recognized in 2001 with his appointment to the Order of Canada for his exemplary community leadership, particularly in the area of French language education.
Laurent’s contributions to his local and professional community were numerous; board member of the Royal Ottawa Hospital, the Ottawa Civic Hospital, and the Ontario Hospital Board. His local involvement also included chairing the board of the Centre de service à la famille for over 10 years. Professionally, he served on the board of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) where he was named Fellow of the CPA and on the Ontario Board of Examiners in Psychology, where his contributions were highly valued. In his retirement years, he was President of the Canadian Section of Souvenir Normand and a member of Canadians for a Nuclear Weapons Convention.
At his core, Laurent had an insatiable appetite for new knowledge which made him a natural educator and teacher – a skill for which he was highly esteemed. Laurent completed a BA at Collège Mathieu in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan and earned a PhD in Psychology at the University of Ottawa in 1961 where he served on its faculty and directed the Guidance Centre from 1955–1973. At the Commission on Post-Secondary Education of Ontario he contributed significantly to future planning of post secondary education, and in particular, French language education. He then served as the President of Algonquin College in Ottawa (1973–1982) where his collaborative and winsome leadership shaped the College’s healthy educational culture. Late in his professional career, Dr. Isabelle was appointed Director of Education for the Correctional Services Canada after which he returned to private practice in marital and career counselling.
His inquisitive nature reached beyond the material: Laurent’s quest to know and understand the spiritual realm lasted his entire life. A deeply spiritual man, he lived and died believing in God. While admitting to struggle with the complexity of faith, this did not stop his pursuit to know and explain God as best he could. His contribution to the publication “Ce que je crois” demonstrated his longing to understand and contribute to the quest of others.
In spite of his many accomplishments, professional and community contributions, awards and decorations, the things that brought him his greatest joy were times with family and friends, on holidays or at the family chalet on Lac Pemichangan, playing a game of bridge, cribbage, golf, tennis, skiing or just sitting in the sun. And nothing lit up his blue eyes more that his beloved wife, Elaine.
There will be an opportunity to meet with the family at Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa, on Friday, March 15th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A mass will be held in celebration of Laurent's life at 1 pm on Saturday, March 16th, at Paroisse Saint-Jean-Baptiste, 96
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

C'est avec une profonde tristesse, nous annonçons le décès de LAURENT ALBERT ISABELLE, 90 ans, originaire de Lisieux en Saskatchewan, le mardi 26 février 2019 à Victoria, Colombie-Britannique.
Époux bien-aimé pendant 61 ans de Mary Elaine Isabelle (née Leblanc), Laurent est le très cher père de Paul (Lyne Paquet), André (Shelley Cram), Thérèse (Brent Fearon), Pierre (Lisa Krzywicki) et le grand-papa chéri de 9 petits-enfants et de 4 arrière-petits-enfants. Il était le frère de Jean-Paul Isabelle, O.M.I. et de feu Sœur Thérèse Isabelle, S.G.M.
Dès leur première rencontre avec Laurent, les gens sont séduis par ses yeux bleus, son sourir et son rire chaleureux. Sa curiosité naturelle lui donnait la capacité d'engager des conversations avec les gens, peu importe le sujet. Laurent était un homme brillant et humble, aimé de tous. Il avait un talent naturel pour valoriser autrui, grâce à son écoute et sa générosité exceptionelle. Ses avis et ses judicieux conseils étaient recherchés. Ses amis et collègues se souviendront d'un homme attachant, reconnaissant et enjoué.
Laurent a défendu la culture et la cause francophone avec fierté et ardeur; membre actif du Club Richelieu toute sa vie, membre fondateur du Conseil des affaires franco-ontariennes, président du conseil du journal Le Droit et un membre actif du Conseil scolaire publique d'Ottawa, contribuant à l'établissement des écoles secondaires francophones publiques dans la capitale. Sa participation à Dialogue Canada depuis sa fondation en 1990 témoigne de son engagement profond pour le bilinguisme canadien. Son leadership communautaire exemplaire, en faveur de l'enseignement en français, lui ont mérité l'Ordre du Canada en 2001.
Les contributions de Laurent à sa communauté ont été nombreuses; membre des conseils des hôpitaux Royal Ottawa et Ottawa Civic, ainsi que du Conseil des Hôpitaux Ontariens et du Centre de service à la famille. Professionellement, il siégait aussi au conseil de la Société canadienne de psychologie, ou il a été nommé Compagnon du SCP, et au conseil des examinateurs en psychologie de l'Ontario. À sa retraite, il a été président du chapitre canadien du Souvenir Normand et membre des Canadiens pour une convention sur les armes nucléaires.

Grâce à ses qualités humaines et son apétit insasiable pour les nouvelles connaissances Laurent était un éducateur inné. Gradué du Collège Mathieu de Gravelbourg en Saskatchewan, il a obtenu son doctorat en psychologie de L'Université d'Ottawa en 1961 où il avait enseigné et dirigé le Centre d'orientation de 1955-1973. À la commission d'éducation post-secondaire de l'Ontario, il a participé au développement des études post secondaires, particulièrement en français. L'audace de sa présidence du Collège Algonquin d'Ottawa entre 1973 et 1982, a marqué la vocation éducationnelle de cette institution. Vers la fin de sa carrière, le Dr. Isabelle était Directeur de l'éducation aux Services correctionels du Canada avant de retourner en pratique privée comme orienteur professionnel et conseiller conjugal.
La nature curieuse de Laurent s’étendait au-delà du matériel, sa quête pour connaître et comprendre le monde spirituel durera toute sa vie. Un homme profondément respectueux de toutes les religions, il a vécu et est mort en croyant en Dieu. Tout en admettant lutter contre la complexité de la foi, sa contribution à la publication «Ce que je crois» démontre son désir ardent de comprendre et de contribuer à la quête des autres.
En dépit de ses nombreuses réalisations, récompenses et décorations, ainsi que de ses riches contributions professionnelles et communautaires, ses plus belles joies ont été ses moments passés avec sa famille et amis, en voyage ou au chalet familial situé au bord du lac Pemichangan, en jouant une partie de bridge, de cribbage, de golf, de tennis en ski ou simplement assis au soleil. Et rien n’alluma plus ses yeux bleus que sa femme bien aimée, Elaine.

Il sera possible de rencontrer la famille à Hulse, Playfair et McGarry, 315, rue McLeod, Ottawa, le vendredi 15 mars de 14h à 16h et de 18h à 20h. Une célébration de la vie de Laurent aura lieu le samedi 16 mars à 13h, à la Paroisse Saint-Jean-Baptiste, 96 avenue Empress. Elle sera suivie d'une réception.

Au lieu de fleurs, des dons peuvent être faits à l'Institut de cardiologie de l'Université d'Ottawa.
