Obituary for Philip Malan de Carteret

Philip Malan  de Carteret
Peacefully, on August 26th, Philip Malan de Carteret died in the hospital at the age of 93.
Beloved husband of the late Mildred McCarthy and predeceased by his missionary parents John Herbert and Maud de Carteret and his siblings, Irene, Jasper, Lois, Clare, Margaret, and Dorothy. He leaves behind his much loved sister, Elizabeth Murphy, and many nieces and nephews. Philip was born in Ootacamund and spent his early years in India, where he was educated at Breeks Boarding School. In 1936, he and his family returned to England, where he pursued his studies at Seale-Hayne Agricultural College. He joined the British Air Force during WW II. In 1946, he emigrated to Canada, where he worked at the C.I.P. Alcohol Plant, and later in Agriculture Canada as a research technician until his retirement in 1986. Philip enjoyed travel, journaling, and writing poetry. He was happiest close to nature, with a special interest in plants, and a love for animals. Special thanks to the staff at the Grace Manor and the Civic Hospital for their kindness and care. Friends and family are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue (at Richmond Road) on Tuesday, September 2nd at 1pm until the time of the Memorial Service in the Chapel at 2pm. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Salvation army Grace Manor would be appreciated.
