Obituary for Patrick James McGill

Pat’s life journey ended on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at age of 60 at the May Court Hospice. Best friend and life partner of Janet Sutherland. Proud father of Erin and Graeme. Loving son of Alice (nee Derouin) and the late Clinton McGill. Dear brother of Michael (Pascale Jutras) and predeceased by brothers Mark (Chris) and David. Fondly remembered by the Sutherland clan and all his extended family, colleagues and friends.

Pat was a teacher for 35 years by profession and vocation, retiring from the Ottawa Carleton District School Board in June 2015. He touched the lives of many young people as a teacher, hockey trainer, coach, mentor and outdoor educator. A lifelong learner himself, Pat was known for his expertise in the kitchen, the workshop, the garden and in the great outdoors. An avid canoeist, we likened Pat’s last months to a very difficult portage at the end of an otherwise wonderful trip.

The family extends appreciation to those who cared for Pat during his recent experience with pancreatic cancer: Drs. Jonker and Pantarotto, and the nursing staff of the Ottawa Cancer Centre, Carefor Ottawa, the Ottawa Hospital and the May Court Hospice.

Cremation has taken place. While there will be no visitation in keeping with Pat’s wishes, the family welcomes everyone to a celebration of Pat’s life which will be held at Southminster United Church, 15 Aylmer Avenue, on Saturday, November 5 at 2 p.m., followed by a reception. In memory of Pat, donations to Pancreatic Cancer Canada, the Hospice at May Court or Friends of Gatineau Park would be appreciated.
