Vicki Plouffe

Dear David and Moira, We were so sorry to learn of Shelagh’s passing and to realize that she was relatively close to Vicki’s home in Kanata. Our mother (née Hazel Keyes) and Lillian were teachers and dear friends in Aklavik and luckily ended up living only an hour’s drive from each other in their later years. Lillian and Pat often visited Kemptville, and we remember it was always a jolly time. In the past year, we discovered our Mom’s five-year diary from her Aklavik days. She crammed a lot of information onto those pages, so we have been transcribing it. On October 21, 1939, she wrote, “Shelagh Courtney born at 8 a.m. this morning….Had dinner at Courtneys’—Pat so excited & talkative.” And on November 8 (the day after they got home from hospital), she wrote, “visited Mrs. Courtney at 5—Shelagh a dear.” We were very interested to read Shelagh’s recent contributions to the National Capital Opera Society newsletter: such a talented writer. If later on, you feel able to contact us, we would enjoy hearing from you to compare notes on our parents’ histories. Sincerely, Vicki Plouffe and Mary Reddick Avey, family historian (Warren, Michigan)
