Mr. Bill
I first met Bill when he was "THE coolest teacher" at Westmount High School in the late 60's, only to have him re-appear in my life as my Mum's (Sheila Johnson) boss at Dawson College Student Services. In a tremendously turbulent time, socially and politically, again he was the coolest. She would describe student meetings and unrest and protests, all dealt with supreme aplomb by Bill. It was one of the happiest, and most life changing periods of her life. And when I, as a ne'er-do-well student, was running into "socioacademic" problems, she asked Bill to come over and have a talk with me. I don't remember the specifics of the conversation but I know he spoke with no anger or condescension, and very gently pushed me back onto a sane track in my life! It really was a turning point in my budding juvenile delinquency.
We also shared the love and appreciation of the Rouge River Valley and the Harrington area north of Montreal. Recently I had sent him pics of an old map of the area, and I believe he and Jill had stayed at our camp on Johnson Lake at times.
I am greatly saddened by his departure, but gladdened by the knowledge of the joy and enlightenment he brought to many young peoples lives. Much love to Jill and all the family.
