The Compassionate Coffee

One Spring morning John and I met in the Elgin Street Diner to hash over our message about a new Federal budget. Cucooned by coffee, we agreed that billions more needed to be spent to spur the economy; we got passionate and rapidly wrote a blistering press release. When it came time to go, we found that between us, neither had enough money to leave a tip for the waitress! John laughed: "From a billion to a dime - there's a Tao Ching moment," he said, alluding to the Buddhist admonition to be moderate in all things. John was a deep student of Buddhist philosophy. It did not surprise me at all to hear from the waitress that John had returned to the shop and given her the tip. He lived a life of "Survival of the Kindest", where we all realize that each person is fighting a great battle. Inside the Tao Ching book that John gave me, he highlighted his favorite Tao passage. I think it sums up his life, and his power: The wise teach without telling, allow without commanding, have without possessing, care without claiming. He was a great human being and I shall miss him deeply. I know that for Carol, he would have said that the good and the beautiful will permeate her life, and will replace the sorrow. He has now left behind all limitations, and become the traveler...and as he would put it, you cannot travel the path until you have become the path itself. He was a guide, a colleague, a friend, and an example. I am so fortunate to have known him. Travel well, John.
